Recyclo-Bot Project

About the Project

Recyclobot is a monthly mail-order product targeted toward children 6-10 years old.  Each month the customer receives a new robot made from everyday household items: buttons, pipe cleaners, cardboard tubes, etc.  The goal is to inspire children to look at everyday items more creatively and encourage them to reuse the item in some new creative manner instead of tossing things into the trash.   This assignment will be composed of multiple parts spread across several weeks of development.

The First Part (Assembling and Product Shots)

Firstly, I started the project by assembling the ‘Robot’. Immediately after I finished putting the robot together, I had to gently carry him outside and lead him up against a tree and take a product shot that would then be used as the cover for the Recyclo-Bot Poster.

I was tasked with using any common items that can be scavenged and should have at least 12 components for the built robot.  On a side note, I had to mark down any expendable materials I used. In the final design of the assembly instructions, I needed to list an inventory of all items being used and any materials not included in the kit. Finally, I had to photograph a product shot of it for the final instruction sheet.

  • 2 Water Bottles
  • 1 Cereal Box

The Second Part (Logo Design)

Following the step after assembling and product photography, I was tasked with developing a simple, bold but friendly logo design to represent the Recycle-Bot brand, the client asked me to ensure that the logo will work in black and white and in color. To begin, I started by simply sketching 3 relevant logo concepts as you will see below…However, in the final composition of the vector image in illustrator, the logo looked nothing like the sketches, This was due to several feedback and suggestions from the client to make the logo look distribution ready.

Lastly, I needed to create a style guide for the finished logo designs, which included the following:

  • A Design Rationale
  • Logo
  • Brand colors and font breakdown
  • and Sketches

The Third Part (Instruction Sheet)

This was the most important and thorough part of the whole design process, I applied the notes I had written down in Step One, and put in an organized and cohesive layout of how the robot was built. This was so that when the client went to distribute the product to young kids they can follow along with instructions and build their very own robot for themselves. I was also sure to include at least three factoids about recycling so the children learn while creating.

Instruction Sheet Needed to Include:

  • Product Photo from Step One
  • Display Recyclobot logo
  • A Few Factoids on the front of the poster
